First Birthday

You turned one year old on September 4, 2012!  Here is how we celebrated your special day!

We went to Story Time at the Crystal River Library. They sang "Happy Birthday" to you and Ivy, and you ran around instead of listening to the story.

You played with Tad during play time:

Then we went to the park to celebrate with Ivy, who was born just a few hours before you were:

Mommy designed a special shirt for your first birthday and ironed it on a onesie for you to wear today (Grandma Linda embroidered the real one for you to wear at your birthday party a few days later):

When we got home, Mommy set to the task of taking your one-year-old picture. Most of the shots look like this:

You were very wiggly!  But we finally got a great shot:

You look like you're smiling at Mommy, but this is what you are really excited about:
(You LOVE playing with the phone. It lights up AND beeps!  What could be better?!?  You've only called 911 twice so far...)

That evening, Grandma Linda and Papa came over with pizza and presents:

I'm sad I forgot to get a picture of you with Grandma and Papa.  They gave you some awesome clothes and a farm with lots of animals that make lots of noises! They also gave you some more special "Dear Dragon" books!

Finally, we ended the day by stripping you down to your diaper and giving you your first cupcake.  You didn't eat very much of it, but you sure enjoyed playing with it!

HAPPY FIRST BIRTHDAY, SWEET BOY!

One year catch-up

Dear Jay,

You are ONE YEAR OLD!!!  (OK, 14 months!) This has been the fastest year of our lives! I still just can't believe that only a year ago you were just a tiny little baby who flailed a lot and did nothing more than eat, poop, and sleep! And now you can run, and play, and talk!  You are such an amazing little boy!

Blogging has obviously fallen by the wayside (now that you're only taking very short naps), so I'm just going to have to jump on here as I can and record stuff before I forget it, and not worry too much about pictures.  I can always go back and add pictures later.

You now have 12 teeth!  You have all eight of your front teeth and your first four molars.  Teething has been rough...we're all ready to be done with this for a while!  It looks like one of your canines is on its way in; once you have all four of those, we should have a break before you get your two-year-old molars.

You are starting to talk a lot!  You say "Daddy" more than any other word.  You also say "mama" sometimes, and you say "doggy" a lot, but the big news is your first big word: "dinosaur"!  I'll write a whole new post about that in a minute.

You also love to wave and say HI to everyone you see!  Sometimes, I think you get your feelings hurt when people don't say "hi" back, but most people do.  You are so friendly and happy, and you make other people so happy when you smile at them and greet them!

You don't sleep very well, but that may be because of the teeth.  You still nurse a lot, about every 2-3 hours during the day, and at least that frequently at night.  Daddy can get you back to sleep really easily, but when Mommy goes in during the night, you won't sleep unless you nurse.  The last three nights, you've been up about every half hour, so you and Mommy have been sleeping on the couch a lot.  We're praying that Jesus will help you sleep better, because if you don't, you may have to stop nursing so that your precious little brain won't think you need it so often.

You love to play outside more than anything else in the world!  You would live outside if you could.  You still like to put rocks in your mouth, so Mommy can't take her eyes off of you for a second.

The other word you say a lot is "Baby".  You call yourself "Baby", we think you think that is your name!  I guess Mommy needs to start saying "Jay" more and "Baby" less!  We had been thinking that you were calling a lot of things "Baby", especially balloons, which you LOVE, but Daddy figured out tonight that when you point to something and say "Baby", you mean "Baby wants that!"

You can eat anything now, and we usually feed you whatever Mommy and Daddy are eating, but you eat a lot less than you used to (which also may be why you're not sleeping very well anymore). For breakfast, you usually eat a little bit of oatmeal, and for lunch, you usually eat a couple of bites of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  You love junk food, unfortunately, and your favorite snack is honey mustard pretzels (yum!).

You love to give High-Fives, and when you are fussy, you will usually stop when we ask you for a high-five. In fact, if you're getting into something you're not supposed to, we'll ask you for a high-five and you'll run across the room to give it to us!

You also throw your arms up above your head when we ask you "How big is Jay?" SO BIG!

Your favorite song is "Itsy Bitsy Spider".  You're starting to try to do the motions, especially the spider part.  When you're crying in the car, you'll usually stop when mommy starts singing it, and you always clap at the end, even if you're still crying.  It's pretty cute to see a baby clap while he's crying!  :)

There's so much more I want to write about, so I'll never forget each special thing you learn and do, and I'm going to try to start blogging more often in the evening when you go to bed.

You are an amazing and wonderful little boy, and your Daddy and I still can't believe that God loves us enough to give you to us.  Every minute with you makes us so happy.
