Big News!

Jay's world will change forever at the end of July!!!

SLEEPING

For the last three weeks, Jay has not slept for more than 30 minutes at a stretch. To say that we are all sleep-deprived is the understatement of the century; I haven't had more than three hours total sleep a night in three weeks.  This last week, things came to a head with Matt and I both getting sick - he had a bad cold, and I had a 24-hour stomach bug that has taken me a week to recover from. Thursday night I reached my wall with Jay; I was up with him 15 times while still fighting a fever and I knew that it was the last night I could do this. I was done.

I have tried everything imaginable to avoid making him "cry it out". I slept in his room on the floor for two weeks to pat him down every time he woke up. I've put him in warmer jammies and cooler jammies. I've tried co-sleeping (he's way too excited to be in the no-no room to sleep). I've fed him an extra meal right before bed. I've even given him Tylenol and Benadryl -- doctor-approved dosages, of course, and he is teething.  Nothing, absolutely nothing has even come close to working.  But still I've resisted making him cry it out because article after article that I've read has promised me that it will turn my happy, affectionate baby into a sullen shell of his former self: that his brain will regress into that of a baby who was neglected and raised in an orphanage, abandoned and unable to make human attachments; that he will never let me hold him again, that he will stop making eye contact; and worst of all, that he will develop mental illness as an adult directly because of this. I've had visions of him curled in a fetal position in the corner, rocking back and forth and mumbling to himself. I have been nothing less than terrified of letting him cry.  But after Thursday night, I knew I had absolutely no other options.

I decided that I wasn't going to go cold-turkey with making him sleep all night; that I would start with him only getting nursed back to sleep at midnight, three, and five.  Months ago, when he was sleeping better, these were the times he typically woke up. Then later, I'd working on eliminating one night feeding at a time until he was sleeping through the night. I also decided that when he woke up crying, I'd go in and hug him and lay him back down and tell him I loved him, so that he wouldn't just be waking up and thinking he was all alone. But then I would let him cry until the times I had decided. I also decided I wasn't going to worry about his terrible napping habits yet (if Matt puts him down, he'll sleep in his crib for 30 minutes, but will only sleep for me in the car).

Before I put him to bed last night, I fed him as much as he would eat, dressed him in the jammies I thought would be best, gave him Tylenol for teething and Benadryl (which again, hasn't worked for sleeping before) for his runny nose.  I rocked him and made him nurse for almost an hour -- I kept touching his face to make him drink more, even after he fell asleep.  And the whole time he nursed, I prayed and prayed and prayed.  And I heard something.  Some would say I had a "word from the Lord" -- I don't know if it was that, or if God just helped me to realize something.  But suddenly, I had the thought "God loves Jay more than I do." And I realized that if I so desperately want what is best for Jay, how much more does God want what is best for him?  And even though I know what is best for Jay -- sleeping -- my human limits simply cannot force that to happen for him.  But God created Jay with the need for sleep, and He has the ability to give him sleep.  I felt so much peace after that, and went to bed knowing that God would take care of my little boy through the night, and would protect his little mind from the "evils" of crying.

Jay slept for an hour (his longest sleep in three weeks), then woke up, and Matt patted him back to sleep.  Jay then woke up at, get ready for it: MIDNIGHT, THREE, AND FIVE O'CLOCK!  I still just can't believe it.  To the minute!  OK, he actually woke up at 4:58, but I'm counting it!

This is one of those moments where I would build a monument to remember God's faithfulness.  If God is going to take care of Jay's sleeping, he is going to take care of him in all the other things.

***

It's three weeks later, and we aren't sleeping through the night yet, but we're doing better!  He does have to cry sometimes, but it's getting less and less and he's sleeping better and better.

Sweet Memories: Shoes and Socks

Jay learned the word "shoe" last weekend, and he's perfect at it: he recognizes all of our shoes, whether sandals or tennis shoes or boots, and calls them all shoes.

Yesterday, when he fell asleep in the car, I snuck some socks on his feet. When he woke up, he pointed to them and said "shoe!" I told him, "No, those are socks. We wear socks under our shoes."

He looked at me with an expression of complete seriousness, and said, "wow."

First Birthday

You turned one year old on September 4, 2012!  Here is how we celebrated your special day!

We went to Story Time at the Crystal River Library. They sang "Happy Birthday" to you and Ivy, and you ran around instead of listening to the story.

You played with Tad during play time:

Then we went to the park to celebrate with Ivy, who was born just a few hours before you were:

Mommy designed a special shirt for your first birthday and ironed it on a onesie for you to wear today (Grandma Linda embroidered the real one for you to wear at your birthday party a few days later):

When we got home, Mommy set to the task of taking your one-year-old picture. Most of the shots look like this:

You were very wiggly!  But we finally got a great shot:

You look like you're smiling at Mommy, but this is what you are really excited about:
(You LOVE playing with the phone. It lights up AND beeps!  What could be better?!?  You've only called 911 twice so far...)

That evening, Grandma Linda and Papa came over with pizza and presents:

I'm sad I forgot to get a picture of you with Grandma and Papa.  They gave you some awesome clothes and a farm with lots of animals that make lots of noises! They also gave you some more special "Dear Dragon" books!

Finally, we ended the day by stripping you down to your diaper and giving you your first cupcake.  You didn't eat very much of it, but you sure enjoyed playing with it!

HAPPY FIRST BIRTHDAY, SWEET BOY!

One year catch-up

Dear Jay,

You are ONE YEAR OLD!!!  (OK, 14 months!) This has been the fastest year of our lives! I still just can't believe that only a year ago you were just a tiny little baby who flailed a lot and did nothing more than eat, poop, and sleep! And now you can run, and play, and talk!  You are such an amazing little boy!

Blogging has obviously fallen by the wayside (now that you're only taking very short naps), so I'm just going to have to jump on here as I can and record stuff before I forget it, and not worry too much about pictures.  I can always go back and add pictures later.

You now have 12 teeth!  You have all eight of your front teeth and your first four molars.  Teething has been rough...we're all ready to be done with this for a while!  It looks like one of your canines is on its way in; once you have all four of those, we should have a break before you get your two-year-old molars.

You are starting to talk a lot!  You say "Daddy" more than any other word.  You also say "mama" sometimes, and you say "doggy" a lot, but the big news is your first big word: "dinosaur"!  I'll write a whole new post about that in a minute.

You also love to wave and say HI to everyone you see!  Sometimes, I think you get your feelings hurt when people don't say "hi" back, but most people do.  You are so friendly and happy, and you make other people so happy when you smile at them and greet them!

You don't sleep very well, but that may be because of the teeth.  You still nurse a lot, about every 2-3 hours during the day, and at least that frequently at night.  Daddy can get you back to sleep really easily, but when Mommy goes in during the night, you won't sleep unless you nurse.  The last three nights, you've been up about every half hour, so you and Mommy have been sleeping on the couch a lot.  We're praying that Jesus will help you sleep better, because if you don't, you may have to stop nursing so that your precious little brain won't think you need it so often.

You love to play outside more than anything else in the world!  You would live outside if you could.  You still like to put rocks in your mouth, so Mommy can't take her eyes off of you for a second.

The other word you say a lot is "Baby".  You call yourself "Baby", we think you think that is your name!  I guess Mommy needs to start saying "Jay" more and "Baby" less!  We had been thinking that you were calling a lot of things "Baby", especially balloons, which you LOVE, but Daddy figured out tonight that when you point to something and say "Baby", you mean "Baby wants that!"

You can eat anything now, and we usually feed you whatever Mommy and Daddy are eating, but you eat a lot less than you used to (which also may be why you're not sleeping very well anymore). For breakfast, you usually eat a little bit of oatmeal, and for lunch, you usually eat a couple of bites of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  You love junk food, unfortunately, and your favorite snack is honey mustard pretzels (yum!).

You love to give High-Fives, and when you are fussy, you will usually stop when we ask you for a high-five. In fact, if you're getting into something you're not supposed to, we'll ask you for a high-five and you'll run across the room to give it to us!

You also throw your arms up above your head when we ask you "How big is Jay?" SO BIG!

Your favorite song is "Itsy Bitsy Spider".  You're starting to try to do the motions, especially the spider part.  When you're crying in the car, you'll usually stop when mommy starts singing it, and you always clap at the end, even if you're still crying.  It's pretty cute to see a baby clap while he's crying!  :)

There's so much more I want to write about, so I'll never forget each special thing you learn and do, and I'm going to try to start blogging more often in the evening when you go to bed.

You are an amazing and wonderful little boy, and your Daddy and I still can't believe that God loves us enough to give you to us.  Every minute with you makes us so happy.

Nine and Ten Months

Well Jay, Mommy did it again...so here is where you are in your ninth AND tenth months of life!

You are learning so many new things!!!  You recognize a lot of words; here is a list:
Mommy
Daddy
Maggie
bath
dance
clap
all done
more
milk

You started dancing a few weeks ago, and it is seriously the cutest thing in the history of the world!!!  Any time someone says "dance" you jiggle your shoulders and shake your booty!  So cute!!  You can also clap when we ask you to!  Sometimes you'll wave when we ask you to, but mostly you clap when we say "wave".  Last week, everyone was clapping in church, and Daddy whispered "clap, Jay" and you clapped, too!

You are starting to eat big people food.  Sometimes, you still like baby food, but mostly you want to eat what Mommy and Daddy are eating.  Maggie is soooo excited that you are eating grown-up food now, because you drop a lot of it.  You went through a phase for a couple of days when you would spit out all the baby food we gave you.  It was horribly messy!  So Mommy gave you some of her chicken, and you gobbled it up!  You've eaten a lot of different foods now, but your favorite thing is still Cheerios!  You eat a lot of Cheerios every day (so does Maggie).

You have eight teeth now!  Your mouth is symmetrical!  You may not get any more teeth for a while (here's hoping), but you do a very good job biting with the eight that you have!

Since you started making such a mess with your food (you liked to spit it into your hand and rub it into your hair), you've started taking baths every night.  You LOVE baths!!!  You like to throw your squirt bottle out of the tub, and you want Mommy to throw it back to you.  We played this one night, then the next night you remembered and wanted to play it again.  You're a very smart little boy!!!

You love to crawl all over our house.  We had to baby-proof our house very quickly once you started pulling yourself up on the furniture!  Right after you and Mommy got back from visiting Great-Grandpa in Michigan, you pulled a heavy glass bowl off of the side table and it shattered all around you.  Fortunately, Mommy got to you before you moved and none of it cut you.  Then the next day, you pulled a ceramic bowl out of the cupboard and banged it on the floor and broke it.  Again, praise God you weren't hurt at all!  Mommy and Daddy did a lot of sweeping and vacuuming that week!  Now you have a cupboard in the kitchen that has only plastic and rubber things in it, and you're allowed to play in your cupboard as much as you want to.  You like to pull everything out and climb in, but it takes you a while and usually gives Mommy enough time to fix dinner!  We keep the bathroom door and the doors to Mommy and Daddy's room and the guest room closed, and you can go wherever you want to in the rest of the house.  Oh, except the laundry room, because you love to mess with Maggie's dog food.  Maggie runs to us and tells on you when you get into her food.

You have also started to "fake cry" when you want your way.  The face you make is really funny!

You've had quite a few boo-boos, now that you're crawling everywhere.  You mostly get boo-boos on your forehead.  This week, you fell into the corner of the wall and got a huge purple goose-egg that even bled a little.  You were so sad and Mommy and Daddy were so sad, but you didn't cry very long.  We think you're going to grow up to be a pretty tough kid!

You traveled a lot in your ninth and tenth months!  In June, you and Mommy flew up to Michigan to go to cousin Kayla's wedding.  We stayed with Great-Grandpa and got to see every single one of our Michigan family members...there are 49 of us now!  Then in July, we drove up to North Carolina and spent three weeks with Grandpa and Grandma Tilley.  Even Maggie got to go!  We had so much fun visiting with them and with Aunt Sarah and Aunt Hannah and Uncle Chris!

You learn names very quickly!  You were only around Aunt Hannah and Aunt Sarah for a day before you knew the difference between them!  We would say "where's Aunt Hannah" and you would look right at her, then we'd say "where's Aunt Sarah" and you would look right at her!  You really are a VERY smart little boy!!!

It's so hard to believe that in just six weeks, you will be one year old!  You are growing up so fast, and we are so proud of you!  Every day you get sweeter and more fun.  We love you so much, sweet boy!!!

Bouncing!

I LOVE TO BOUNCE!!!!

Jay's first Easter

Doing some catch-up here...

We had so much fun for Jay's first Easter!  Jay got to go on THREE Easter egg hunts!

On the Saturday before Easter, we went to an Easter egg hunt at Seven Rivers Presbyterian Church.  Aunt Katie, Savanah, Hannamae, Gracie, and Grandma Linda joined us.  Right when the hunt was about to start, Mommy realized she didn't have her camera, and by the time she ran back to the stroller to get it, Daddy and Jay had already found two eggs!  There were lots and lots of kids there, so these were the only two eggs we found, but they were the best ones!  They were little froggies, and they had cars inside!

attempting to eat the car we found in the egg

Daddy and Jay posed in the very spot where the coolest eggs ever were found.

Egg Hunt!!!

We did it!

Our little family.  With frog eggs.

Hangin' with my BFF Tad.

Cousins!  And eggs!

That's right, Gracie.  Look a the yellow egg while I eat your pink egg.

Oooh, pretty egg!
That night, Mommy dressed Jay up in his adorable Easter outfit and took pictures (while it was still clean). Mommy messed up and tried to rotate thee pictures using "paint", which screwed up the files' codes and now most of them are sideways.  Maybe Daddy can fix them???

Here is the "official" Easter picture:

And here are the outtakes:

On Sunday, we went to church to celebrate our Risen Lord with our church family.  After the service, we had brunch and fellowship while the kids had an Easter egg hunt.  Once again, Mommy missed it because she ran to the car to get the camera.  :(

Jay and his special friends, Paige and Belle.

Jay is very popular with the ladies!
After church, we went to Grandma and Papa's house for Easter lunch and a scavenger hunt extravaganza.  It was seriously so spectacular we were too busy to get many pictures, but imagine this...filing a balloon with helium and floating it up to a certain point next to a tree so that the code on the balloon matches the key on the tree to get your next clue.  Yep, Aunt Katie is pretty amazing!
Savanah gave me bunny ears!

My awesome Easter egg basket!

My favorite part of the day...

Playing in the dirt, of course!  Good thing Mommy took those pictures yesterday!
